Understanding your NDIS budget

What Core, Capital and Capacity Building mean, and what each part of your plan can pay for.

Your NDIS plan splits your funding into different parts, called support budgets. Knowing what each one is for helps you plan your spending and avoid surprises.

Core supports

Help with everyday living and taking part in your community. Core funding is usually the most flexible.

  • Assistance with daily life
  • Consumables, like continence products
  • Social and community participation
  • Transport

Capital supports

Bigger, one-off items. This funding is usually set aside for specific things in your plan.

  • Assistive technology and equipment
  • Home modifications
  • Vehicle modifications

Capacity Building supports

Help to build your skills and independence over time. Funding is usually set for each category.

  • Support coordination
  • Improved daily living, like therapy
  • Finding and keeping a job
  • Improved life choices — this is where plan management is funded

Tips for managing your budget

  • Check your statements. We send you a monthly statement showing what’s been spent and what’s left.
  • Spread your spending across the length of your plan, so you don’t run out early.
  • Ask before you buy if you’re not sure which budget something comes from. We can check for you.

Some newer NDIS plans are set out a little differently. If your plan looks different to this, don’t worry — call us and we’ll go through it with you.

This guide is general information only. NDIS rules can change and every plan is different. For advice about your own plan, call us on 1300 765 573 or talk to your LAC or NDIS planner.
